Last month heralded the introduction of a new community Cricket Day organised by Caterham Rotary.

The event was free and enabled people of all ages to take part either playing or watching cricket. Caterham School very kindly donated their Sports ground for the day at Caterham on the Hill and we were pleased to welcome Jonathan Batty and Andrew Patterson from Caterham School who provided help in getting the event organised/off the ground. Both have played professional cricket in the past.

There were two main tournaments organised, covering under 15s and adults in a series of “round robin” T10 matches plus free coaching and “Kwik Cricket” for young people provided by First Ball Academy [FBA] from Chaldon.

Julie Pescod, one of the Caterham Rotary organisers commented, “we would like to thank Caterham School for making the day possible, by allowing us to host the tournament on their cricket ground in Park Avenue free of charge and it was really lovely to see the young people getting the chance to play and watch cricket.”

Winners of the under 15s matches were FBA who had defeated teams from Kenley and Purley Cricket Clubs.  Winners of the adult tournament were Old Caterhamians who had defeated teams form Caterham Round Table and Caterham All Stars.

130 + people of all ages attended the day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Merv Arana, joint organiser from Caterham Rotary said “We had a really successful day and we will be starting soon to plan for June 2023 event”.
