15 July @ 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm

My name is Rodney Paul, I am 59 years old. I was brought up in Sussex and then, in my early 20’s moved to a remote Scottish island; the Isle of Coll and spent two year being a sheep farmer. I then moved to Edinburgh and over time became a Project Manager, specialising in implementing IT systems into NHS and private healthcare facilities. I moved to the Midlands in the early 1990’s where I have lived ever since. My wife and I took early retirement in 2018 and immediately set off on a three month around the world trip
I have held a fascination for the Antarctic for many years and my personal hero is Sir Ernest Shackleton. I have now been to the Antarctic twice, both times on small expedition ships. As part of our round the world trip we spent three weeks travelling to the Falklands, South Georgia and then onto the Antarctic Peninsula. We then travelled around parts of South America, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand.
Apart from travelling, I am a keen cyclist and have done Lands End to John O’Groats and last year did the North Coast 500 in Scotland. I have recently been a contestant on The Chase and was up against The Beast!
‘The Adventures of Sir Ernest Shackleton’ is about the heroic adventures of one of the world’s greatest ever explorers.
The talk provides an account of the various expeditions that Sir Ernest Shackleton undertook to the Antarctic. He was an inspirational leader; determined to succeed even under the harshest of conditions, but was never afraid of admitting defeat, if the welfare of his men was at risk. He led the infamous Endurance Expedition to the Antarctic which resulted in an open boat journey across the most hostile ocean in the world. Shackleton inspired his men like no other explorer of his time, as will be demonstrated during the talk.
Shackleton is my personal hero and although I am by no means an expert on his explorations, I will bring his endeavours to life by recounting his exploits through photographs and stories.
