Members of the Caterham Rotary Club were kept busy over the weekend of 30–31 May collecting donated bicycles for the charity Re-Cycle.

The charity collects unwanted and unused bicycles, many of which may have been sitting in sheds and garages for years and ships them to Africa. There, the bikes can dramatically reduce the time spent travelling to school, fetching water, or transporting goods for small businesses. Locally trained mechanics refurbish and maintain both old and new bicycles, providing sustainable transport suited to local conditions.

By removing pedals and turning handlebars through 90 degrees, volunteers were able to load more than 40 bicycles into a transit van for transportation to Re-Cycle’s base near Colchester. After sorting, the bicycles will be packed into a shipping container—Re-Cycle can fit more than 500 bicycles into a single container—before being sent overseas, where they will help transform lives.

It is a far better outcome than consigning perfectly usable bicycles to landfill.

Further information about Re-Cycle can be found at Re-Cycle.
