Four local senior schools took part this year in our annual Essay competition (Prix de la Paix) namely Woldingham, Warlingham, Caterham and de Stafford. The basis of the competition was that each school had its own winner.

The winners received a monetary Award of £100 plus a  Rotary Winners  certificate. All participants received a Rotary certificate of commendation for taking part in the competition. The challenge  for the students was to discuss the idea of peace, war and conflict and how each can come about and then be resolved.

Each written account was assessed according to the students’ abilities to structure an argument, discuss both sides of the issue and come to a conclusion. As well as the content, the correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, idioms and their original ideas were taken into account.

Each essay submitted was written in a modern foreign language and each school taking part chose the language that  they wanted to use.

The results for each school’s individual winners were as follows:

Kate Devine: Woldingham School (French).

Bradley Strange: de Stafford School (Spanish)

Alex Findlay: Caterham School (French)

Daniel Robinson: Warlingham (Spanish)

Heather Thompson: Warlingham (French)

Rotarian David Beckitt  the organiser of this year’s event said “ the standard of the entries was  again very high year and all the submissions were commendable. We would like to thank all the students for taking part and we wish them well in their future studies.”
